The small city of Humble and the adjacent community of Atascocita are ideal for those who prefer to live a fair distance away from the city without giving up modern conveniences. If you’re looking for a location on the outskirts of Houston with convenient access to various outdoor activities near Lake Houston, then it’s worth considering a move to these fantastic areas.

Development here kicked off after oil was discovered during the first decade of the 20th century. By 1905, Humble became home to the largest-producing oil field in the entire state of Texas, leading to the founding of The Humble Oil and Refining Company – one of the early incarnations of Exxon before the latter merged with several other oil companies. After the oil boom, local entrepreneurs and landowners went back to farming and timber harvesting.

As industrial activity gradually declined following the end of the oil boom. Humble and Atascocita became conducive to a more residential lifestyle. The housing stock in these two areas is mostly composed of single-family units. Home prices can range from $200,000 to upwards of $600,000, although there are properties that can reach million-dollar price points in upscale neighborhoods.

  • The slew of activities around Lake Houston. This reservoir isn’t just Houston’s main water supply but it’s also a popular summer recreational spot for fishing, boating, camping, and biking. Here, you’ll find acres of lush forest, lakeside cabins, miles of hiking and bike trails, and a bountiful supply of largemouth bass, bluegill, and other fish.
